Week at Unsworth Sugden paves career path for university student

Student Anna McKittrick explains what it’s been like working with the USG PR team this week…

I had never really considered a career in PR before. I was unsure whether I had the right skillset or even if I’d enjoy the job – until now. Initially, I’d wanted to pursue a career in journalism. I’d always imagined myself in a newsroom donning a chic pantsuit and power-pose combo!

It wasn’t until the beginning of my third year of studying English and Journalism, at De Montfort University after i’d taken part in marketing project over the summer, that my attention was drawn to a career in PR. Admittedly, prior to this the only impression I had of the PR industry came from many devoted hours spent watching Absolutely Fabulous.

After researching Leicester based PR and marketing agencies, I was attracted to Unsworth Sugden and decided to email to ask if I could be considered for work experience.

Since my first moments through the door, everyone has been so friendly and made me feel very welcome. Any nerves that I had were immediately settled. Everyone has treated me like a real member of the team.

My time at Unsworth Sugden has revolved around assignments such as writing press releases for leading UK companies, doing research and creating social media schedules. The tasks I was given have allowed me to develop new skills and build upon abilities that will be essential for my future career.

Although I don’t think I will ever become a bona fide Edina Monsoon, my time at Unsworth Sugden has only spurred me on more to pursue a successful career in PR and marketing.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my week at Unsworth Sugden and I would highly recommend anyone with an interest in PR and marketing, or even just writing, to come and do work experience here.
